Acne is an extremely common condition that causes spots to form on the face, neck, back and chest. It can range in severity and type, from a mild outbreak usually accompanied by blackheads and whiteheads to more severe, characterized by cysts and nodules.
Although normally thought of as only affecting younger people during puberty and adolescence, acne can afflict anyone at any age and, while medically harmless, can have a demoralizing effect on a sufferer’s wellbeing as well as leaving unsightly scars on the skin.
Acne is caused when the hair follicles in the skin become blocked by an overproduction of sebum, an oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands to lubricate the hair and skin in order to stop them from drying out.
The sebum mixes with dead skin cells, which plugs the follicle and causes it to bulge outwards, creating whiteheads. If the blocked follicle is open to the skin, it will form a blackhead. In more severe cases, the skin’s natural bacteria can contaminate these spots, infecting them and leading to papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.
Increased testosterone levels play a major part in teenage acne, as the sebaceous glands are very sensitive to the hormone and react by producing more sebum. Acne is also a common genetic condition and can sometimes be triggered by certain medications, cosmetics or as the result of poor nutrition.
