What Is Excess body Fat?

Excess body fat generally occurs on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, flanks & upper arms. They are typical areas of unwanted, localised fat that are especially difficult to eliminate, even when combining a healthy diet and regular exercise.

It is a common problem for both men and women and can be a cause of frustration and embarrassment. In more severe cases, it can lead to health problems.

Excess Body Fat

The most common causes of excess body fat are poor dietary choices and an inactive lifestyle. If we consume more calories than we are able to burn off, what is left over is stored as body fat. But there are other reasons as well.

A lack of sleep has been shown to cause the body to store fat. Those who achieve less than six hours sleep a night experience a slowing of their metabolic rate and a rise in insulin levels, which impairs the body’s ability to burn fat.

A large number of prescription medications, such as beta-blockers and contraceptive pills, have the side effect of weight gain and recently, a strong link has been made between long-term exposure to chemicals in the atmosphere and obesity.

People who have recently stopped smoking, although obviously a very good idea, often find that they gain significant amounts of weight as they battle with nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
